The traditional Dalmatian exterior and modern glamorous interior of the villa give guests the best of both worlds. Please click here for a youtube tour of the entire property.
Built in 1934 for the treasurer to the king of Yugoslavia, the property included a main house and three smaller buildings, with 8,000 square feet or so of combined living space and 150 feet of frontage on the water. The limestone used to build the villa was excavated from the same area as the White House stone. Bob Benmosche purchased the home in March of 2001 and 10 years of renovations by Croatian craftsman and stone workers resurrected this gorgeous villa, a jewel of Dubrovnik.
In 2006, Villa Splendid owner Bob Benmosche, bought land in Dingac and Viganj and began cultivating grapes and olives making some of the Adriatics best wine and award winning olive oil. Guests may visit the vineyards by taking an awe-inspiring two and a half hour ride along the Dalmation coast.
Villa Splendid is peacefully secluded on the waters edge of Lapad Peninsula, 2.5 miles from the center of the walled city of Dubrovnik or an easy 15 minute bus ride. A 10 minute stroll will take you to an array of water activities or the vibrant "pedestrian walkway" filled with lively outdoor cafes, restaurants, street vendors and a multitude of children's activities. Sun yourself on one of the home’s several stone terraces with views of the Adriatic Sea and Elaphite Islands. Invigorate yourself by diving into the pristine salt water or relax and enjoy the sunset with a loved one from the Jacuzzi overlooking the sea.
I was in Dubrovnik in Croatia back in 1997 and found it was a beautiful place. I said to myself, "Bob, what do you want to do when you retire?" I had read an article in Wine Spectator that said Zinfandel may have come from Croatia.
Marija & Boris are a mother and son team. Boris is now the manager of their family winery. He is the 21st generation in his family to make wine.
One day, while building rock walls for the vineyard in Viganj, Marija's husband noticed a grapevine growing wild. Immediately construction ceased because the vine resembled the original Zinfandel.
